I focus on my breathe as I exhale and imagine the air being taken in by the trees and flowers, and the other plants that convert CO2 into oxygen. And when I inhale I picture not just myself, but the birds and squirels, and the other animals breathing in with me. Nature photography reminds me that our planet and the life on it are connected. Photographing nature also fills me with wonder and thanksgiving for the natural world. This is one of my favorite subjects, because it reminds me that I have a role in something larger than myself. When others see my photographs of flowers, landscapes, animals, etc. I hope some part of that wonder and humility touches them too.

Of all the photography I make for clients, sometimes it seems like the baby and chilren's portraits are the ones that will be the most loved. It is a treat to work with parents and watch them interact with their children. Seeing parents so full of love for their little ones never fails to make me root for them and want to make photographs that will preverve those special days.

I remember taking my first photography course in college and asking my friends to pose for me. I soon discovered that portraits are more than just "nice" pictures of people and more than a record of ones age and style. I began to feel, and still do, that portrait photography can be used to show something deeper and harder to define. In my best work I think I show some of that undefined "something" which makes us each unique.

Now, over twenty years later, the Sweet Chariot Music & Arts Festival has grown into a highly anticipated three day sold out event each summer. Having been invited to photograph the event and live with the musicians for the last few years, I can say it is both a music and arts festival as well as a giant family reunion. Many of the same musicians have been coming since the early years and now their adult children even perform onstage and host the concerts. In this gallery I want to give you a sample of the documentary work I'm doing with the festival. My hope is to give a sense of the setting and community, as well as to highlight the powerful musical performances. Please check out the official site and look up the individual artists as well. www.sweetchariotmusicfestival.com
